Hi, my name is Rachel North. I am based in Hobart, in the beautiful island state of Tasmania, Australia, and I live with my husband Paul and our blue colour-point British Shorthair, Thomas. From a very young age I have loved art, and particularly painting landscapes and animals.

I paint realistic pictures from photographs, using only the highest quality materials. Before I begin, we talk about the place or the subject, whether you would like acrylics or oils, whether the work should be framed or unframed, and the size of canvas that suits your wall and your budget.

Landscapes are a true pleasure. Living in the south of Tasmania, I paint the country around me, from the rugged mountains known as the Hazards on the east coast to the tranquillity of the Russell River south of Hobart. Pet portraits are the other half of the practice. Before I start, I ask about your animal’s life, the endearing habits and funny quirks, what makes them tick, and what you love most. Those details help the painting carry personality as well as a likeness, so it can bring you joy for years. I have painted many dogs and cats, and each one has become a treasured portrait in a home or an office. It is a thrill to see someone’s joy when their companion is brought to life on canvas.
